Recently, Professor Zhutong’s team from the Research Institute of Process Equipment and Environmental Engineering, the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation, NEU made new progress in the field of wastewater treatment. Their related outcomes have been published in the journal Water Research in the form of a paper titled Simultaneous shortcut nitrification anddenitrification in a hybrid membrane aerated biofilms reactor (H-MBfR) fornitrogen removal from low COD/N wastewater. For this paper, NEU is the first unit to complete this paper, and Ph.D. student Chang Mingdong is the first author; Professor Zhu Tong and Associate Professor Wang Youzhao are co-corresponding authors.

By coupling synchronous shortcut nitrification-denitrification process with membrane aeration technology, a hydrogen-based membrane biofilm reactor (H-MBfR) was designed and developed in their study in response to growing costs incurred by low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of wastewater in China. In addition to its efficient treatment of water pollutants, it has more pollution-resistant membrane modules, thus prolonging its own service life. With lower energy consumption for wastewater treatment, this reactor has provided new ideas for wastewater denitrification, and it is favorable for reducing carbon emissions in terms of environmental protection.

Having been consistently committed to conducting research in the field of environmental equipment and engineering, Professor Zhu Tong’s team has particularly concentrated on studying wastewater treatment, disposal of organic solid wastes and environmental remediation. Scores of their research outcomes have been successively published in advanced environmental journals, including Water Research, Chemical Engineering Journal, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Bioresource Technology, Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Colloid and Interface Science and Science of the total environment.

As reported, Water Research is a top international journal about aquatic ecology and its average impact factor has been 11.547 in the past five years. It is also a Nature Index journal (Nature Index 1.0). Nature Index, which is a database for statistically analyzing number of papers published by higher learning institutions and scientific research institutes in 82 types of the most internationally influential academic journals, is one of critical indexes for evaluations and rankings on scientific research capabilities and comprehensive strengths.
